Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors is an independent charity but part of the Age UK family. That means we are a local charity for local people and donations stay where they are needed, on the North Yorkshire coast and the former districts of Scarborough and Ryedale in North Yorkshire.

We work with other Age UKs and our national charity to increase our impact on the over 50s, but we provide services that are exactly what our residents need here. A perfect blend of national and local services working together.

Our Values continue to be an organisation that is respectful, inclusive, and empowering, aiming to provide the highest quality services to people., As a Finance Manager the main priority of your role is to be responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality financial and business support services and contributing to the achievement of the strategic plan.

The Finance Manager is accountable to the Chief Executive Officer for the delivery of business support services to specified standards and within agreed budgets. They will be a member of the Senior Management Team and as such will participate actively in the wider development of the Charity's activities.

The main responsibilities of the role are:

  • To ensure that effective systems are in place for the delivery of the business support service including financial procedures, the maintenance of accounts and all other functions deemed essential to enable Age UK North Yorkshire Coast & Moors to achieve the aims of its strategic plan.

  • To produce timely reports, variance analysis and commentary on performance against budget to agreed formats including the identification of risk and recommending appropriate remedial action.

  • To meet regularly with the Chief Executive Officer to advise on the implications of reports and to present options and appraisals as may be necessary to address performance issues.

  • To oversee maintenance of the financial records and present management accounts and other financial information to the board of trustees.

  • To place reserves under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer in accordance with decisions of the Board.

  • To advise on areas of financial performance improvement and highlight areas of potential risk and concern.

  • Prepare the annual budget and cash-flow forecasts and reforecast at the end of each month.

  • To ensure the monthly payroll is prepared and processed.

  • To prepare the annual accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charity Commission and company legislation.

  • To contribute to business planning processes and the development of business strategy and plans.

  • To contribute to the financial and personnel aspects of all funding proposals, consultancy contracts and other such related activities and to analyse the business impact of such bids.

  • To complete all financial returns required by funders by the agreed deadlines.

  • To manage key external relationships including those with Bankers, Auditors, Solicitors, Financial and Pension Advisors (internal and external) and Insurance Brokers.

  • To contribute to relevant communications work and ensure that effective IT and related systems are in place and fit for purpose to support the Beth Johnson communications strategy.


  • The general responsibilities of the role are:

    Accountancy qualification (minimum AAT Level 3, preferred AAT level 4 or above)

  • Up to date working knowledge of Companies Act, Charities SORP, VAT and PAYE/NIC regulations.

  • At least 2 years' experience of managing accounts.

  • Management of account production.

  • Preparation of annual accounts for auditor review.

  • Budget production.

  • Recognised accountancy qualification.

  • High level IT skills in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint plus e-mail and web.

  • Experienced in using Sage.

  • Ability to negotiate with external partners.

  • Leadership and motivation.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills.

  • Understanding of charity and company legal and accounting frameworks
